As you can see from the product images the sole is leather and not rubber; you'll definitely want to use these for fashion only, which is fine because, again, they look great; the outside zip shouldn't be an issue, unless you wear your clothes in a way that shows off the whole of the boot, which is a deeper issue all its own. Anyway, in case its a concern, chicks seem to dig these, and they're spiffy enough for light business casual, as long as you dress accordingly i.e. no bolo ties and the like. They're pretty comfortable - standard break in rules apply here. The most comfortable boot I've ever owned is the FRYE Rogan sheepskin boot, which I HIGHLY recommend, but these are nice too, and will... That said, these are without a doubt the best boots I've ever owned. From the moment I took them out of the box and put them on my feet, they felt like an old comfortable pair of shoes worn for years.
