They had been opened before, but for a discount of close to 50 percent I couldn't resist since I can't afford Fryes at full price. I have a hard foot to fit - size 9, high arch, wide foot and I haven't been able to comfortably wear regular height boots in quite awhile. Another reviewer noted that these worked for her with the same foot issues so I went for it. I have never done this before, but when I put them on, I did a little happy dance! Very comfortable! My high instep makes any boot hard to pull on, but these being short made it easier. I should note that I tried another style of Frye boot last year, another shortie, and that style was harder to pull on; I had to send it back. I like that there is no heel border to bend over inside the boot. They fit best with a medium sock (too thick and my wide foot feels strangled, too thin and there's some slippage). I am on pair number 3 all have been very poor quality, pair 1 had a needle hole in the leather, different material on 1 heel, white powder covered pair number 2. All 3 had lumpy souls, I guess you could say I did a little soul searching, but never found the soul for me. The browns are great looking boots, very comfortable boots.
